History (Locals Caring for Locals)
This practice is the original optometry practice in Forster. Established in 1955 it began its life as a satellite practice of the older Taree Practice (1942) servicing the Forster area one day a month.
It has now evolved into a full time practice and has made a number of relocations until its current modern premises in Wharf St today.
We now have 6 staff members including Dale Rolfe, our full time optometrist and owner who has been with us since 1986 and Tanya Megaw, our practice administrator who has been with us for more than 30 years.
We are located at the bridge end of Wharf St Forster on the southern side closest to Breckenridge Channel.
Parking can be found right outside the practice with a 15 minute limit ideals for quick pick ups like spectacles and contact lenses. Across the road is a 1 hour limit ideal for a full consultation. 2 hour parking is found easily in Memorial Drive with a short a short 20metre walk through Blows Lane or one of the arcades to find us in Wharf St. Full day parking is available near the Forster Boat Harbour and is a short beautiful waterside stroll under the bridge to Wharf St.
We have access to wheelchairs and we have a disabled toilet. Even better facilities and access are available for the disabled at our Tuncurry Practice with disabled parking out the front.

Dale is our full time optometrist and owner of the practice – he is available for consultations Monday through Friday.
Forster is Dale’s home town after living here for over 30 years. He completed his optometry degree at the University of NSW in Sydney, graduating with honours in 1986. He has special interests in eye disease, diabetic management and glaucoma.
He is a director of Eyecare Plus, a member of the Australian Optometry Association and is a longstanding member of the Australian Optometrical Panel.
Elke is a full time optometrist. She is available for consultation Monday through Friday and Saturday by appointment.
Forster is also Elke’s home town, being born here. She left Forster to study optometry at the University of NSW and completed her degree in 2006. She spent time in New York developing her skills during her preceptorship. She has since returned to Forster to make it again her home. She is a mother of 2 and so has special interest in children’s vision as well as diabetic management and contact lenses.
We proudly supply members of all major health funds, including:
- Defence Health
- Medibank Private
- Teachers Health
- Phoenix Health Fund
Health Fund members with a valid optical entitlement receive 1 pair of single vision glasses with no out of pocket expense.*
Yes we still bulk bill for your convenience.
Please bring in your Medicare Card at the time of your consultation as we are continuing to bulk bill what we can after the federal government’s reduction in rebates to optometry in January 2015. There will be an extra charge of a non rebatable service fee of $20 per visit payable by the patient. This enables us to continue with our ability to carry out full comprehensive testing without reducing patient care by reducing time spent with you.
We highly recommend that all patients have a full macula scan at each full visit. The cost of this is $45 for adults and $15 for children.
Other tests are used on indication. Fees for those not covered by Medicare will be explained at the time of your full comprehensive consultation.
Spectacles start from $179, or 2 pairs for $249 for single vision complete spectacles. See Our Offers for more information about our spectacle pricing.
Contact lenses start from as little as $30 a box.
